Choosing The Right Artist

Updated: Dec 27, 2018

Art always comes first at Zealous Art Studio & Tattoo, which is why choosing the right tattoo artist is so important. Because tattoos are permanent pieces of artwork, each tattoo should be something you truly like and want. In fact, we would rather have you leave with nothing, than give you a tattoo you don’t absolutely love.

Once you’ve got a design idea in mind, the next step to getting a tattoo you love is choosing the right artist. Your experience of getting a tattoo will be as memorable as your final piece of art, and the artist you choose will be a part of that memory. So, choosing your artist is just as important as choosing your tattoo design.

Step 1: Find an artist with a style that matches the style of tattoo you want.

Each tattoo artist will have a unique style, as well as different strengths and specialties because they are artists, first and foremost. Tattoo artists can’t specialize in everything, which is why you need an artist whose particular style and skill set matches the tattoo style you want. For instance, if you want a tattoo with vibrant and complex color work, choosing someone whose specialty is black and grey work might not be the ideal choice.

The easiest way to get a sense of an artist’s style is to check out their social media. You can also call Zealous or reach out to us on social media to get more specific information about each of our tattoo artists and their styles. Also, if you see someone with tattoos you like, ask them who did the work for them!

Step 2: Schedule a consultation with the tattoo artist whose work you like.

Meeting your potential tattoo artist in person is important for several reasons. First, you need to make sure the artist can deliver a design that is exactly what you hoped for or maybe even better than you imagined! Be sure to bring a photo or example of the design you’d like, because the tattoo artist might also have suggestions of ways to personalize the design or share insight on the best placement for the piece on your body.

You should also ask to see their physical portfolio during the consultation. Since artists don’t post everything on social media, this will give you a broader sense of their work. Also, because each of our tattoo artists at Zealous determines their own pricing and scheduling, the consultation is the best time to discuss these details.

Second, the consultation is the time to see if you like the tattoo artist, not only as an artist but also as a person. Getting tattooed should be a positive experience, and a big part of that has to do with your interaction with the artist. You should feel comfortable around your tattoo artist because, after all, you are trusting them to give you a permanent piece of art.

However, don’t feel obligated to get a tattoo from a particular artist just because you had a consultation with them. You can always continue looking if it’s not a great fit for you.

Step 3: Get that tattoo!

Remember: if you are having second thoughts about your tattoo design or you need to sleep on it for a bit, our artists would rather have you walk out with nothing than give you a tattoo you don’t like.
